Faculty Issue: Academic Integrity

One of the most important issues facing higher education faculty today is the growing number of violations to the codes of student conduct pertaining to academic integrity, including cheating and plagiarism in all their various forms. The following list contains abstracts and links to Maryland college and university policies on the topic and links to resources from other institutions as well.

Anne Arundel Community College: http://www.aacc.edu/library/file/AcadIntegrityPolicy.pdf

College of Southern Maryland: The college's policy on academic honesty is included on its Academic Information and Policies web page, with a link to a PDF version of the Student Handbook, which explains in detail the types of academic integrity violations and their consequences:

"Students are expected to perform their own academic work. Plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty are considered extremely serious offenses. Students are personally responsible for understanding the various forms of academic dishonesty as they are explained in the Student Code of Conduct in the Student Handbook. Ignorance of any requirement for academic honesty will not constitute an excuse from disciplinary proceedings." (Academic Information and Policies).

Howard Community College: The policy, procedures, and penalties for violation of its academic honesty policy are published in a PDF version in HCC's online student handbook: http://www.howardcc.edu/studentactivities/handbook/policies.pdf

Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing: The ethics policy is found in its online Student Handbook for the School of Nursing.

St. John's College's  policy can be summed up as follows....

“The college exercises its disciplinary authority when its principles, policies, or rules are violated. In the exercise of this authority, it may become necessary to impose sanctions and penalties for infractions. The college acts in these matters primarily through the Dean, the Assistant Dean, the Director of Student Services, or the Director of the Graduate Institute.” (Handbook, p.6)

“Plagiarism, falsification of documents, and other cases of academic fraud carry a penalty up to expulsion, and may be disclosed in the academic record.” (Handbook, p.9)
